What an incredible couple of days! The PWA competition has been completed in nearly two days in epic conditions putting Cabo Verde / Sal firmly on the map for windsurfing. Serious waves hit Ponta Preta on Friday morning producing world class conditions and some spectacular arials. By the end of the day the singular eliminitaion was finished culminating in a four man final: Nik Baker (4th), Kevin Pritchard (3rd), Josh Angulo (2nd) and Kauli Seadi (1st). Standout arials and wave selection from Pritchard and Angulo but Seadi excelled with almost double the number of bottom turns and exceptionally sensitive critical wave riding.
Saturday started with the same 30 knot winds but a more Westerly swell and waves running all the way down to the point. Angulo stood out all day backdooring wide sections and launching his trademark arials. Polakow looked to be struggling on small boards and Pritchard failed to produce the goods against Angulo leaving the final to Angulo and Seadi. Seadi struggled with too small a sail and got closed out by a mast and a half set. One beautiful ride wasn't enough, but favourite from the previous day, Seadi had one more chance against Angulo.
In the final final Seadi had two awesome waves, producing ariels and one massive floater. Angulo's formulaic arials continued unabated however, and he looked unstoppable as Seadi, once again, got caught inside breaking his mast.
The competition ended with a very close split in scores and opinions (four judges vs three) and Josh Angulo became the champion of the first leg of the PWA World Championships 2007. Cape Verde is one very happy nation tonight!!!

από το πρωι το κύμα γινόταν όλο και μεγαλύτερο από mast high σε μεγαλύτερα με αποτέλεσμα να γίνονται όλο και μεγαλύτερα aerials και τα wipe outs να είναι όλο και χειρότερα,
με την πάροδο της ημέρας ο πήχης ανέβαινε συνεχώς με όλο και ψηλότερα aerials.
στον τελικό του single elimination έφτασαν τελικά οι
Kevin Pritchard (Starboard / MauiSails), Nik Baker (Mistral / North), Cabo Verde's Josh Angulo(Αngulo boards / Ezzy Sails), and Kauli Seadi (Quatro / Naish).
και οι 4 έκαναν πολυ καλό xtreme windsurf
αλλά ο Seadi και ο Angulo διάλεξαν ακόμα πιο radical set waves αυξάνοντας τις πιθανότητές τους για την νίκη.
τελικά υπερίσχυσε ο Seadi παίρνοντας την νίκη, με δεύτερο τον Angulo. ο Kevin Pritchard βγήκε 3ος με τον Baker 4ο.
double elimination
η μερα ξεκίνησε με τεραστια κύματα σχηματισμένα τέλεια από τους offshore ανέμους που έπνεαν κάνοντας τη μέρα τέλεια για το double elimination..
τα αλμπουρα εσπάγαν ένα ενα στα βράχια και όλοι ανέβαζαν συνεχώς το επίπεδο του surf.
ο Jason Polakow (JP / NeilPryde) έπεσε μέσα στην ίδια ημέρα στα βράχια και έσπασε 5 με 6 κομπλέ rigs και σανίδες και εξαντλήθηκε εντελώς από το πιό δυνατό xtreme σκάσιμο κύματος
του κόσμου.
ο Pritchard έπρεπε να κερδίσει τον Josh Angulo για μια ευκαιρία για τον τελικό. παρόλ'αυτά η καλύτερη επιλογή κύματος και ένα απίστευτο κύμα με ένα back arch aerial και μερικά απίστευτα turns έκαναν τον Josh Angulo να περάσει και να αποδείξει άλλη μια φορά την κλάση του και την εμπειρία του στο απόλυτο waveriding που προσφέρει η παραλία Punta Preta Cabo Verde / Sal.
ο Αngulo επρεπε τώρα να κερδίσει τον νικητή του single elimination Kauli Seadi για να μπορέσει να κερδίσει την πρώτη θέση σε όλο το event.
o Angulo κερδίσε τελικά πολύ εύκολα τον Kauli Seadi όταν ο δεύτερος διάλεξε να χρησιμοποιήσει 4αρι πανί γιατί μάλλον δεν μπορούσε λόγω των extreme συνθηκών να κρατήσει μεγαλύτερο με αποτέλεσμα να βγει στα βράχια και να παλέψει για να ξαναμπει μέσα για να ξαναπροσπαθήσει να υπερασπιστεί την πρώτη θέση του, αλλά με μερικά ride που πρόλαβε να κάνει δεν ήταν αρκετά για να υπερασπιστεί τη θέση του.
για να καταλάβουμε την διαφορά και την ανώτερη κλάση του αθλητή ο Josh Angulo έκανε με πανί μέγεθος 5.8 και κερδίζει πολύ εύκολα τον Kauli Seadi.
έτσι το δεύτερο μέρος του double elimination ήταν αυτό που θα έκρινε τον νικητή και πάλι ο Kauli Seadi βγήκε στα βράχια με αποτέλεσμα να σπάσει το άλμπουρό του και να μην μπορέσει να ξαναμπεί.
ήταν σχεδόν αδύνατο κανείς να αμφισβητήσει την ανώτερη κλάση του αθλητή Josh Angulo μετά το σφύριγμα της έναρξης γιατί μόνο 2 μεγάλα ride μετρούσαν και για άλλη μια φορά ο Josh Angulo κατάφερε με το μοναδικό του στυλ όπως τα cut backs με το ένα χέρι, τα υψηλότερα aerials of the lip του αγώνα, το πιό κοντινό στο χείλος του κύματος τεχνική
και η άνεση χωρίς ούτε ένα λάθος η τούμπα τον ανέδιξαν νικητή του αγώνα.
ορδές από θεατες σήκωσαν τον Angulo στα χέρια και τον μετέφεραν στην εξέδρα πριν καν ανακοινωθεί το αποτέλεσμα..

PWA Wave World Cup Cabo Verde: Josh Angulo takes it all!

Josh Angulo, the local hero takes home the first trophy from the brand new tour stop Punta Preta on Sal/Cabo Verde Islands. Kick-starting the 2007 season, Sal received 32 of the most rewarded wavesailors to show off at one of the world's most superb wave spots.
Perfect eight to ten foot waves rolled through the point break, and fifteen knots of wind made for the best competition conditions the PWA has ever seen: starboard tack down the line waveriding, in hollow powerful surf.
The top pros battled it out for $35,000 and precious World Tour points.
Despite the holding period still being open until March 4, the event is closed by now: The double elimination and super session are already completed, leaving the riders free to enjoy the superb sailing all over the Island of Sal!
Making it to the finals were Australia's Jason Polakow, Maui's Kevin Pritchard, the current PWA Wave World Champion, Cabo Verde recent transplant Josh Angulo, and Brazil's Kauli Seadi.
In the outstanding conditions, the local boy, Josh Angulo, powered his way into first place. With impeccable timing from knowing the break so well, Angulo ripped to pieces every part of the wave to come up with the title.
In second is Kauli Seadi, who had won the first elimination and was laying some beautiful turns carving right in the pocket. Nevertheless, Kauli Seadi who was on a 4 squaremeter sail, went down against Angulo in the very final heat, who was going big on a 5.8 sail!
Kevin Pritchard took third place with his massive aerial attack, and Jason Polokow rounded out the top four with his power sailing arsenal.
"I am super happy to win this event. My friends and family were here to watch me take the victory. I could hear the beach cheering me on after every hit on the wave, it was really cool" says Josh Angulo.
Kevin Pritchard: "The level of sailing here was just incredible! It was cool to be part of this event with such amazing conditions. ... I was happy to get third place and it is a good start in defending my world title again this year!".
Becoming fifth after a great run up the ladders in the second elimination, Jason Polakow says: "I think I trashed 5 or 6 entire rigs on the rocks today!" Hollow waves and a horrendous shorebreak had made this competition fierce, even for the most experienced Australian.
Many beachgoers were treated to the sight of windsurfing’s highest profile names tearing the lengthy set waves apart. Rarely has the action be seen as close-up as these sandy beaches near Santa Maria allow, with world-class displays performed right under the judges and spectators noses.
