So how did you hear about Jaws?
All the big boys knew about it -- Laird Hamilton, Mark Angulo, Brett Lickle and Dave Kalama had been talking about it for a while.

Had anyone ridden it before?
Besides Roy Patterson and John Voxland who tried (and somewhat) successfully paddle-surfed it, it had never been ridden before that day to my knowledge.

So how did you get to Jaws and what was that first session like?
I went up with brothers Greg and Alex Aguera in Greg's little fishing boat. Greg and I sailed while Alex offered back up support from the boat -- thanks Big Al! Greg was definitely charging. It was all new – a total virgin spot and it is still one of the best days we've ever had up there. I think our ignorance was an advantage that day. The following day, Mark Angulo, Rush Randle, Dave Kalama , Kai Katchadourian, Brett Lickle, Paul Bryan and myself went and sailed it together. It was the first time for those guys. I had one up on 'em. I didn't actually want to go out that day as I was so satisfied and scared from the day before, but my brother made me. We launched by jumping off the rocks, sailed it all day and then did a coast run down to Ho'okipa. Kai actually got drilled onto the rocks -- no jetskis to save him back in those days.

Did you have any sense then that Jaws would become what it is today?
When some of the boys started their tow-surfing thing, I decided to watch from afar. I sensed where the whole thing was going and in my youth, I wanted to keep things pure -- good or bad choice? Who's to say? We now tow and shoot and ride big scary waves all alone in here in Cabo Verde, but I wonder whether we are creating another chaotic water world like Maui's Jaws. Who knows? One thing is for sure, we are having a lot of fun right now.
