Review - Ezzy Wave SE:

The Ezzy Wave SE has gone through revolutionary change. While photos of the sails look similar, the shaping and tensioning have been enhanced, allowing the sail to deliver a much more powerful low end, greater stability, and the same easy handling in transitions.

Unlike prior years Wave SE sails, more of their tuning range is achieved with the outhaul. The result is a sail that is lighter in the hands that feels great to sail!

The sails are different enough that time needs to be taken to learn their tuning range to get the most out of them.

- Gary

The new Ezzy Wave sail has been redesigned with a deeper more forward draft profile versus prior year designs. This new deeper draft provides improved low end power without sacrificing top end control, speed or upper wind range. I have sailed the 4.7, 5.2 and the 6.0 sizes so far and have been thoroughly impressed with the range of these sails. They require a bit less down haul and a more outhaul versus the designs. The addition of a pulley tack fitting on the also contributes to the ease of down hauling and is an extremely well designed fitting.

On the water the sail has improved torque and power. It has continuous and balanced pull regardless of the gusty nature of the wind. The rotation in transitions is very smooth. There is a bit more pop of the battens from one tack to the other versus the model. This is due to more forward draft positioning in the sail and more batten pressure in the Endo-batten pockets. In tuning the sail I found myself adding a bit more outhaul then I expected. This additional outhaul helped to eliminate back hand pressure without compromising the low-end power. I sailed the 5.2 and 6.0 in the waves on Lake Michigan and loved them. I sailed the 4.7 and 6.0 in bump-n-jump conditions in different countries and plenty different seasides and was impressed with the range and comfort they provided in very gusty conditions.

Overall these are great sails with impeccable construction and the most powerful bump-n-jump / wave sail design available!

The Designer: David Ezzy:

My sails have a very different tuning set-up than any sail I have ever designed. They are not supposed to be rigged extremely deep. Well actually they can, for super light wind, but for normal powered sailing they should be set quite flat.

The problem is how to achieve the flat setting. For most typical sails in high wind we want to downhaul a lot, which opens the head and flattens the sail by removing luff profile. Then give some outhaul to take up the clew slack. My sails are quite different in that they take much more outhaul and a bit less downhaul. I should also point out that my sails when set flat will still have a forward draft profile in the middle battens. This keeps the sails feeling balanced in overpowered sailing conditions.

In coming up with the sails I realized the limitations with the typical high-downhaul low-outhaul sails: by downhauling a lot, we are moving the draft back too much and making the leading edge too flat, which in turn makes the sail more "nervous" feeling and harder to sail. I realized that it is better not to "kill" the sail with too much downhaul, but rather to do most of the flattening with the outhaul. I designed the sails with less profile in the leech area and more profile in the luff. They are designed to be downhauled moderately, and outhauled a lot.

These sails have such a huge rigging range that they can be set to be extremely powerful, or very neutral feeling. It is all in the outhaul.

For powered sailing I suggest that you set the downhaul so the looseness between the #2 and #3 battens is just to about to the front of the printed swoosh. Then outhaul until the power is where you want it. You can put up to 7 to 8 cm of positive outhaul. The window should be very flat when looking from the end of the clew to the boom cutout.

A note on downhaul: When I explain to people about the new settings of the sails, some people are inclined to back way off on the downhaul. This is wrong. You still need to downhaul more in strong wind, you just don't want to over-downhaul. Do not go beyond the printed swoosh with your downhaul.

Have you checked out the high wind settings and the rigging videos on our web site? If not, please go to:
http://www.ezzy.com/sails/rigging_index.cfm

So, take your time and play with the rigging and let me know if I can assist you. I am available to answer emails, so please keep me updated.

Power Sails - Ezzy 6.5 No-Cam Edition 2008

Εικόνα

Ezzy Freeride 6.5 no-cam edition
Interview with designer David Ezzy

David, you've been a rather staunch camber advocate for free-ride sails for 20 years. What changed? Were there any breakthroughs or discoveries during the Freeride no-cam edition's creation? I've always felt that cambers offered superior stability and power. The freeride sails I tried to make in the past were too flat which made them gutless and unstable. My new Freeride has a profile that mimics a cam.

How did you go about generating low-end power out of a camless sail? Do you feel this sail lets riders rig small? Power comes from having a deep, forward profile and the right twist. The Freeride can be totally bagged out, yet is still fun to sail. For sure you can rig smaller with it, maybe by .5 square meter.

The Endo-batten system – you created it, and have been using it in Ezzy sails for 9 years. Does its design afford you certain advantages in creating a powerful camless sail? Yes. The Endo-batten sandwiches the batten so that the batten has even pressure on both sides. This allows the batten to rotate easier while supporting a deeper draft.

What are you most proud of about this sail? I am most proud of the workmanship that our people in Sri Lanka put into each and every sail.

Εικόνα

Do you feel the sail has any shortcomings? As you look toward a '08 model, what will you focus on improving? The current Freeride is a 2008 model. I'm sure the 2009 model is going to be better, but it is too early for me to say what exactly will be changed.

Ezzy Sails Freeride 2009

Specifications:
Year 2009
Description:

The Ezzy Freeride has cracked the conundrum of how to achieve a sail with the speed, the power and the stability associated with cam sails but without using any cams at all. The deep, draft forward profile of the Freeride actually looks similar to a cammed sail, but instead of using the mechanics of a camber to put the shape into the sail, the Freeride shape comes from a refined technique of seam shaping.

Of course, now a sail easier to rig, and without the cams, the Freeride flips quicker in jibes. That, simply put, means a faster jibe.

The Freeride is built to last, so it contains no monofilm. Stitch for stitch, material for material, the Freeride is built exactly like its cousin, the Ezzy Wave. The Freeride sail body panels are made with our Spectra X film. The foot uses an even stronger, closer spaced, puncture-proof Spectra X film. The vinyl window offers superior visibility and can be cleaned for the life of the sail. And the Freeride employs our removable, triple pulley system which makes downhauling very easy.

Ezzy 2008 Infinity

Ezzy's 08 Infinity is a superlight, freeride sail available with twin cam or rotational option. The sails come supplied with a simple tuning kit to match your masts. You can set these sails on skinnys or regular masts – for best results you need masts above 50% carbon.

The Infinity is a really powerful but light sail with plenty of low end power and Ezzy's classic top end control.

The real success of this sail is how the sizing works – a 7m will work in superlight winds and power up when you need it to, unlike most of its competitors it's power to size ratio is amazing.

For 2008, the sail requires significantly less downhaul partly due to the new integrated stainless steel pully block. There is more outhaul tuning on the new Infinity than in 06; the draft near the luff has been made fuller for more low end power. The Infinity still maintains its top end control in overpowered condions.

Ezzy Freeride NC

New from the Ezzy Sails loft comes the Freeride NC. This freeride no cam sail has a similar profile to the current Wave SE but with a lower foot and extra foot batten giving the sail even more power and stability. Its construction is identical to the wave sail with its clew placed at the same height as the Wave SE.

On the water, the deep forward draft gives the Freeride NC a very comfy and stable ride, powering superbly in the jibes. The foot rakes nicely on the board for speed, but also works great for those bump'n'jump conditions.

As always this sail comes to you made from the toughest materials available and a finish second to none.

Ezzy 2008 Wave SE

For 2008 Dave Ezzy has improved the SE with a flatter profile and more forward draft, the sails have a more balanced feel with less back-hand pressure. The sails rig similar to the 07 range but are less outhaul sensitive. They still have a huge outhaul range, 7 to 8 cm for strong winds and 3 to 4 cm for light winds.

For 08 the tack pulley can be replaced with a d-ring for those people who want to use a pulley hook. The bigger sizes for '08 are now 6.3 (fits on a 430) and 6.9. They are now 5 battens instead of 6 battens. The new profile is so stable that it allowed me to remove one batten; as a result the bigger sails feel much lighter.

The on the water performance is still excellent in both light and strong winds. Ezzy's in the past were always biased to high winds but the 07 and 08 lines exceed most other brands in light wind performance. Josh Angulo has beaten light weight riders on a regular basis in contests using standard Ezzy sails. We have 2007 sails currently on test and the 08 sails will be available from early July to test.

Ezzy sails still are built in the legendary Ezzy construction double stitching, Vinyl window, endo batten system, heavy duty lightweight Spectra® X-Film, each sail is rigged and checked in the factory before it is shipped to the UK. Ezzy also have one of the highest second hand values of all sail brands. The sails set on both Ezzy skinny masts and regular diameter masts. For best results check the Ezzy rigging guides, and mast match selector.

Ezzy Freeride 2009 is coming soon!
ΜΠΟΡΕΙΣ ΝΑ ΤΟ ΠΡΟΠΑΡΑΓΓΕΙΛΕΙΣ AΠΟ ΤΩΡΑ!

• Improved low-end power.
• Better top end speed.
• Lighter weight.
• Better trimming guides.

Tuning the Freeride is a snap. For setting the downhaul, there are visual indicators on the leech which show you exactly how much downhaul to apply. For setting the outhaul, the Freeride has three clew guide cords, one for light wind, one for medium wind and one for high wind. All you do is set your boom to the length of the guide cord and then outhaul to the end of the boom.

Finally, the quality is second to none. That's why Ezzy rig each and every sail in our factory. And while we're rigging, we set the adjustable top to the correct mast length, we adjust the battens with their correct tension then, we carefully inspect the sail. Only once it passes our rigorous inspection does it go into the bag for shipping on to you.

Ezzy Zephyr
is coming soon!
ΜΠΟΡΕΙΣ ΝΑ ΤΟ ΠΡΟΠΑΡΑΓΓΕΙΛΕΙΣ ΑΠΟ ΤΩΡΑ!

We have fresh new sail called the "Zephyr" and comes in one size, a 7.5.

This sail is LIGHT and designed for the ever popular long boards and stand-up paddle boards that are showing up everywhere.

It features the same spectra-x film that is on our SE, Freeride, and Infinity collection…but uses less reinforcements to reduce weight. It is plenty strong, fast, and rigs up easy.

The Zephyr is meant to be used in lighter wind (pre-planing conditions) but has a huge range as evident by the 7.0cm spread between max and min outhaul settings. Once planing it is fast and comfortable.

Ezzy Skinny Mast

Ezzy RDM is still one of the most dependable masts in the world. It is unsurpassed in quality, performance and value. You know that when you get rinsed by a mast high set, you are going to swim up and find your mast still in one piece! Being of 90% prepreg carbon construction, and its reduced diameter, this is one of the lightest and yet strongest masts on the market.

This year they have added a Kevlar wrap around the boom area to beef it up a little and to make it that much more indestructable. The constant curve of the Ezzy will help broaden the range of your sail, by adding excellent twist off at the top end, and giving your sail a good belly at low end. This mast will help to make your complete rig much lighter and therefore more user friendly.

These masts sit very well on Ezzy's and with the use of Chinook extensions and booms you know you have got a bomb proof rig!

Angulo Chango 2008
Nice toys for big boys!

The Chango 68 is designed to go vertical, and hold its rail in high-speed conditions. However, you will be blown away by the versatlility and ease in sailing, in spite of the boards radical characteristics. The Chango 68 sits well in choppy seas and can be used daily by light sized sailors, heavy weights will welcome this monkey on those very windy days.

The Chango 75 and 82 is a waveboard for all generations, from Hookipa to L'Almanarre...Ponta Preta to Sylt. This quick planing snappy model is a riders dream. An allround favorite, this stick will fit tight in any wave condition.

The Chango 88 is the big boys best friend. Sick of dogging around when the fly-weights are buzzing by? Angulo know your pain and have developed the quikest planing, most efficient 88ltr board ever. Be the first to fly out and get upwind quick, and still enjoy the full manoeuvrability you expect from any Angulo design.

All boards are developed by Ed, Mark and Josh Angulo.

Josh Angulo, CV-1
Josh Angulo grew up on the North shore of Oahu under the watchful eyes of his two older brothers Mark and Andy. As far back as Josh can remember, all the boys were riding surfboards shaped by their Dad, Ed, at their local break, Rocky Point. Ed had been building surfboards since high school and was an avid surfer himself.

Surfing was all Josh knew until he was around six, until he noticed his Dad and his older Brother Mark taking up windsurfing down the street from their house at "Backyards." Ed quickly embraced his growing passion for the sport by jumping full force into making sailboards. All the while, Mark was quickly becoming the hottest new commodity on the pro windsurf scene.

By the mid-80s the family decided to pack it up and head to Maui where Josh got hooked on windsurfing at the age of ten. By fifteen Josh signed his first professional contracts and had his first professional win under his belt at the age of seventeen.

In the two years that followed, faced with constant world-wide travel, large financial contracts and the illusion of being famous, Josh succumbed to many temptations and found himself at a point of despair.

Through support of his family, his faith in Jesus Christ, and God`s Grace, Josh was able to start his life anew. Skip forward to the year 2000 where a new, recharged, and sober Josh Angulo steps back into the ranks of competition and seals 2nd place in the world waveriding ranking.

In 2001 and Josh has married his long time love, Claudia, and is enjoying being a father for his beautiful 2 1/2 year old daughter Danielle. Josh is also trying to break into the business world with his new line of wave fins and t-shirts. You can be sure you'll be seeing a lot more of this guy.

- It is the best and STRONGEST base on the market as the pin is machined to the top washer so that is no chance the pin will unscrew.
