Interview with David

Boardseeker just posted this interesting interview with David Ezzy.

Sail Design: What changes do you see taking place in the next 5 years?

If I knew, I would do it! I know what I want to achieve, like all designers;
make the sail lighter, stronger, faster, and easier to control. How I can do
that? I don't know, it's like a scientific experiment, a learning
experience, you change one thing and you see how it affects the sail.

Material is what we should be thinking about. It's all petroleum based and it's getting more expensive. We should be looking for another material and as far as I'm aware we're not. What other material exists that's not petroleum based? That's the problem.

Material is what we should be thinking about; it's all petroleum based and it's getting more expensive."

Talk through the design of a perfect wave sail.

An effortless feeling, so when a gust hits you don't feel like you're
getting pulled. When you go into the gybe or the bottom turn, you want to
feel totally balanced. You want a sail that doesn't shut off. It keeps the
power a little longer so it can be re-directed. I also want a soft feeling;
I don't want to feel a pull every time you go over chop. The sail has to
have a big range, in fact an incredible range. Two of our wave sails rigged
next to each other with differing outhaul - they don't look like the same
beast.

Shorter masts with compact sails; the Naish Boxer, the JP Fly, the North
Ego - are Ezzy Sails going to go this way?

I designed the Zeta in 1989 (when I was designing for North) and it was a
foot shorter than everyone else's so it's all been done before. The compact
sails are a cool idea as long as they don't give up anything in performance.
Sails have to work on the water that's the bottom line. I could do it on
some of the smaller sizes but across a whole range? A 6.9m, four batten
sail? It's hard. I need to look at it though.

Every sail that comes off the production line gets rigged no other
manufacturers does that."

What's the most fun part of your job?

I never know what I am going to do as I don't have a set regime.
Ok, I go to the office to work but I am usually free to design on what I want. If the idea is not there, it makes no sense working so it's good to able to switch between freeride sails and wave sail design.
Also I love doing accounting;
it takes my mind off designing completely!

Do you feel under pressure to improve the sails each year and do something different even if you think a certain sail range doesn't need it?

I always have ideas but whether they are the right ideas!! But I am always
doing things to improve production, it can always be refined.

Who tests your sails?

Me firstly, I've got to feel it, I can't rely on second hand information,
I've got to get on the water. But saying that I do have a whole bunch of
guys that test for me but I am the first one that gets to go out! It's
important that the sail is tried out by regular sailors. For example, on the
07 wave sail, it was too radical. The team guys loved it, I loved it but
regular sailors didn't know how to rig it. So this year the sail has lots of
rigging indicators and I'm taking time to make sure people know how to rig it via demos, email communication etc.

What are the qualities that set Ezzy apart from the other major sail
brands?

1. We own our own factory that employs 150 local people. That gives us a
higher degree of quality control. Every sail that comes off the production
line gets rigged, even the kiddy rigs. This is not just to check it's got
the right pulleys etc but also to analyze the shape of the sail. If it isn't
right, it doesn't go in the bag. No other manufacturer does this.

Once I found this sail at our Sir Lanka factory; I wouldn't sell it, it
wasn't right. I had the whole factory come and have a look at it, even the
cleaners. I cut it up with scissors. The girls were crying but they got the
point. They know how important it is to me - quality is the most important
thing.

2. I'm sailing every day, making sails because I like windsurfing. I am the
toughest customer to satisfy.

3. I'm obsessed with longevity and I provide a lifetime guarantee with every sail no matter how many people have used it. I stand behind my sails. Some people say to me that's stupid, no one will buy a new sail. But I know people would rather buy a product that lasts and they also know they can sell it on after a few seasons and it will hold its price.

4. Anyone can email me with questions about the sails. Nothing that I can be doing is more important than replying to a customer email. I see my business as a pyramid with the customer on the beach loving his sail at the top. I don't put a lot of emphasis on team riders, they don't buy their sails, they sometimes want something a little strange, and I don't pay up for the PWA so consequently they don't list Ezzy as a sailors sponsor. Luckily I have my son competing and they can't make him change his surname!

"Nothing that I can be doing is more important than replying to a customer email."

Finally is windsurfing on 'the up' or on 'the down'?

I don't take the 'doom & gloom' view of windsurfing that some folk take.
People that windsurf love it; it's a healthy drug that you're addicted too.
Our numbers haven't dropped in ten years. I don't know if the larger
companies have been dumping product due to over production and now they are hurting but for the hard core windsurfers they are still the same.

How to get more people into the sport? Windsurfing is so infectious, it' so
exciting, people will always get into it. Why do we want to be so big? Keep
it small; less crowded on the water, you'll always find a parking spot,
you'll know everyone!

2009 Ezzy Sails
28/05/2008

For 09, later this season, Ezzy will be launching two new wavesail models the Ezzy “Free Wave” and Ezzy “Wave Panther” .When I was in Maui I had a chance to test the two sails-the Free Wave in its finished model and some final prototypes of the new Wave Panther.

Dave Ezzy was pretty excited to show me the new line up of sails and he was quick to get the sails rigged so I could get out and test them. His regime for testing is very solid: rig prototypes with the same boom and extension settings and keep them on the same mast for final testing results. He would rig each sail in literally couple of minutes then I would go out and try them. The panther prototypes looked the same so it was more of a “feel the difference” than “see it” type of test. Over the next few hours we rigged different versions until the wind finally backed off.

Dave was finalising the batten seam shape on the two middle battens to evaluate how to deliver the best power stability. I was left with the Free Wave and a Panther to use during the next week. Dave called me the following day and asked which version of the Panther I preferred. I told him I would like something between the two prototypes .The wind dropped for a few days, I took a rib cracking fall on my paddleboard and went to meet Dave at his office in Haiku a week later.

The new Panther proto was the one between the two prototypes (as we had discussed only a week ago!)I was pretty amazed that Dave could adjust the design on his computer in Haiku, Maui, email the file and cutting plan to the factory and within 7 days receive a finished prototype in 3 sizes.

I tried the new protos until Dave decided this was the cut off point on design for the 09 model - after this point all the extra design work would be for the 2010 Ezzy model.

Why has Ezzy got two sail models this year? –the Panther is a new version of the Wave SE. It has less batten seem shape near the luff, giving it less camber, a shorter boom length, creaseless window, the batten below the window has less draft, requires less downhaul than the wave se 08 and the mast base protector has been removed. There is a new panel of technora material in the leech, which is softer and lighter. In terms of feel, the sail is lighter in the hands, still with plenty of low end power. Using it, you notice that the sail is quick to accelerate, good upwind and in gusty sections between waves you keep going rather than easing off the plane. When you waveride, the sail keeps you powered through your bottom turn and depowers well for your top turn. In the air the sails has a slightly more depowered feel. The reduced boom length makes the biggers sail sizes feel lighter and more manoeuvrable. The new sails will be available in September in 3 different colourways for all the pre-payment customers pre-orders complete size line.

The EZZY freewave has the same panel layout as the EZZY panther –the Free Wave doesn’t have the seam shaping in the battens that the panther has and has no technora panel in the leech. The sail is also available only on in 3.7 4.2 4.7 5.2 5.8 and 6.3, rather than the even sizes that the panther comes in. From a handling point of view the Free Wave is definitely not a downgrade on the Panther or the Ezzy Wave SE as it gives a definite different feel. It has a real poppy light manner to it and in the air it felt amazing - I am sure freestylers will like this sail. You need to be more aggressive pumping the sail to the plane but the sail goes very neutral during moves. The Free Wave will be a sail for anyone who perhaps has not liked the power output and shaping of the Ezzy Wave SE series in the past and likes the the feel of flatter sails. Prices and colours haven’t been released yet.

-GEARED UP-

Zephyr 7.5 - The Release of the All New Sail
The Zephyr is light weight and is designed for the ever popular long boards
and stand-up paddle boards that are showing up everywhere. This sail
features the same super strong Spectra-X film that is used in the Ezzy Wave
SE, Freeride, and Infinity collection, but uses less reinforcement to reduce
weight. It is plenty strong, fast, and rigs easily. The Zephyr is a marvel
for pre-planing conditions and hangs in there exceptionally well for high
wind planing conditions.
http://links.mkt792.com/ctt?kn=15&m=171 ... MzES1&mt=1

Freeride - Tiny Improvements go a Long Way
The '07-'08 Ezzy Freeride quickly became the industry standard for camless
sail designs. David Ezzy isn't resting. The new '08-'09 Freeride is easier
to rig due to refined downhaul and outhaul markings and trim guides. A
lighter feel and improved range can also be noticed right off the beach.
http://links.mkt792.com/ctt?kn=3&m=1711 ... MzES1&mt=1

Wave SE - The Tradition Continues
The Cult following is gobbling up the 2008 Wave SE. Word from David Ezzy is
that the new 2008 SE is easier to dial in and more natural feeling right out
of the bag. The Ezzy Wave SE boasts an extremely wide wind range, incredible
stability, and legendary construction.
http://links.mkt792.com/ctt?kn=2&m=1711 ... MzES1&mt=1

Infinity - 7th Season Perfection
The '08 Ezzy Infinity is the 7th generation and 7 is our lucky number. The
Infinity has matured into a beautifully stable flat water option for sailors
that want to plane right off the beach without pumping. The Ezzy cam system
gives the sail a locked and deep draft which enables excellent upwind
performance.
