Interview with Josh Angulo
21st December 2008

Check out interview with Josh Angulo that was published on windsurfjournal.com. Because the inteview is in French below you can find english translation.

Windsurfjournal.com : During 2008 season, you tested many boards of the market, why did you decide finally to launch your own range called Magnum?

Josh Angulo : I decided to launch our Magnum range for a few reasons. In June of 2008 I was given control of the family windsurf business my father and brother and one of my desires was to expand the brand and reach into all markets. Angulo is a complete windsurf brand, family and company and Slalom boards are very important to us. Also after signing with Maui Sails and doing the slalom tour I became very motivated to try and gain some advantage over my competitors and at the same time develop a product which the public will love. We are very excited about our new Magnum line and all the boards in our range and we look forward to a big year.

WJ : Why did you decide to launch 3 slalom boards "only" when others brands purpose 5 or 6 models for this program?

JA : The new PWA rule allows for competitors to compete on 3 boards. We designed 3 boards to cover all the wind range and different conditions around the world. Our boards all have a very big range and our exclusive RTA (reduced tail area) concept allows for a huge amount of control while riding a slightly wider board. For example, last year I rode a 54 cm in Pozo. This year I will be on 60 cm. But the tail width is about the same as the 54cm due to our exclusive RTA system and this allows the sailor to have control of a smaller board without sacrificing the width necessary for jibing, early planing out of holes etc etc. Our 3 board range will cover the same conditions as 5 or 6 models of the other brands, allowing customers and pros alike to be able to have a complete quiver without having as many boards.

WJ : The nose of Magnum boards with the RNA concept (reduced nose area) is very innovative and strange in the same time... How come this idea ?

JA : This is an idea that we did many years ago on our waveboards an it worked really well in negotiating critical situations on the wave. With the slalom boards, this was reintroduced now by Jean Bouldoires, who designed and perfected our new Magnum range... The proven theory on the slalom boards is that the RNA ( reduced nose area) allows the nose to avoid sticking in any chop and at the same time eliminates un-wanted nose lift in windy conditions. Te reason we maintain the longer board is to have maximum waterline while getting onto a plane and for gliding through the holes. The longer waterline on the bottom of the board facilitates that.

WJ : Do you think people can be "afraid" by this "radical" and innovative outline?

JA : People can be afraid of many things in life .....death, taxes, aids, big waves..... but no need to be afraid of radical and innovative design. The Angulo family has for years been on the forefront of new and exciting designs. Now with the addition of Jean to our R&D team, we are even more radical and innovative. The Bouldoires family is like the Angulo's of Europe.

WJ : In general, new Angulo boards range comes with other new models as the Victory (twin fin) or the Creolia range, is it a new beginning for Angulo boards in
2009?

JA : Yes, there’s definitely a new vibe in the Angulo company, expanded R&D team. Our graphic and media guy, Bogo, is sick. We have an unbelievable range of boards and we are all full on passionate to take it to the people.

WJ : Victory is a twinzer concept but you used to sail with single board in competition... Why did you decide to launch this kind of board ?

JA : Lets not forget who started the twinzer concept many years back..... any ways for me although I ride single fins, I have many friends and clients who may want a twinzer, so we want to have a board for everybody.. The main issue here is to have fun on the water.. Wether you are on a Magnum or a Victory, as long as you're on the water having fun then you are our type of people.

Angulo Boards 2009, Josh Angulo au parloir…
12-12-2008

The Magnums were actually born some years back.
These are designs that jean Bouldoires has been working on for quite some time and from what I understand the RTA ( reduced tail area) has already been integrated by Jean into the RS-X olympic designs. What we found with the RTA is that it is a much more consistent elimination of wet surface area that is not just a big hack out of the tail of your board, better known on todays market as " cutaways".

We found that the current " cutaway " trend , yes it did eliminate wet surface and allowed the wider board that smaller board feeling but also made the boards "lift" in a more uncontrolled fashion. The RTA of the magnums allows for such a clean release of water that the boards have no out of control or weird lift sensation. Of course Jean was meticulous with his bottom shape and he has a technique to achieve a " shape control" that I haven't seen used by other shapers. This allowed us to make the smalest changes in our prototypes and know exactly why and where the changes were being made.

Our bottom shape sits the board low on the water, yet with a slippery feeling that feels like you can keep pushing harder and faster. The RNA ( reduced Nose area) came about from wanting to accomplish 2 things:

A. We wanted to keep a longer board to have a more extended waterline which gets you easier on a plane as well as glides through the holes better .

B. WE didn't want to have a lot of swing weight way up there or a big nose that was going to get lifted by the wind.. thus with the RNA we accomplished what we set out to do.

Finally 2 more points that pushed me over the edge to come on the market with what I am confident will be the surprise board of the year is it's perfect foam distribution which makes for a very balanced ride when you are just standing on the board and the easy rails which give the boards such good grip in and out of the jibes.

We have made a very limited line of these.

They will be PWA registered
and I am basically looking for International Opinion leaders and we will do our best to get you a board wherever you are in the world.

Every board is CNC shaped to exact specs at the Cobra CNC department, guaranteeing precise measurments and built in the highest level of Carbon construction available today.
