Ezzy Wave SE

Interview with sail designer David Ezzy

Windsurfing mag question:
First off, the '08 Wave SE at a glance doesn't look all that different than the '07. Are there some significant upgrades and, if so, what's the thinking behind them?

David Ezzy answer:
The 2008 Wave SE has the draft further forward, which improves the top-end control. The '08 SE also has a more stable profile which gives a smoother feel. Rigging the 2008 is similar to the 2007. They require a moderate amount of downhaul and a lot of outhaul. The 2007 sails had a new tack pulley that was well received by most of our customers, however some die-hard grommet lovers did complain that they preferred a grommet. Rather than force them into a pulley, for 2008 I made a new tack fitting that is removable, so the sail can be set up with the removable triple pulley or with our new D-ring, which simulates a grommet.

Windsurfing mag question:
Last year's buzz on the Wave SE's was their draft-forward design. Is that still present (or refined further) in the '08 model?

David Ezzy answer:
Yes, the deep, draft forward design is present on 2008. Here's a bit of
background: On all sails, the downhaul serves two purposes: 1) open the head and 2) flatten the luff. The outhaul does two things: 1) flattens the sail and 2) bends the mast and at the same time relieves some downhaul tension which moves the draft forward. Most sails (including my older designs) take a high amount of downhaul and a low amount of outhaul. The problem with this type of sail is it produces a flatter leading edge that becomes unstable and draft-back in strong winds. If you over-outhaul a traditional sail it gets way too flat and nervous feeling. For strong wind, I feel it is better to flatten the sail with outhaul, which keeps the draft further forward and gives you more control. In order to achieve this however, the sail needs to have the correct amount of profile built into the sail body near the luff, so that when you apply outhaul, it doesn't get overly flat and twitchy. The other advantage to this design is the huge wind range you can get out of the sail. In light wind you run them with very little downhaul and outhaul and they are very powerful. Then in strong wind you downhaul a bit more and apply up to 8.0 cm of outhaul, which gives you a flat, draft-forward profile.

Windsurfing mag question:
Ok, gotta ask: What's with the "SE" moniker. There's no other wave sail in your lineup. Why label them Special Editions when they all are the same? You're a no-nonsense guy. Is this a sign you've got a soft-spot for clever marketing?

David Ezzy answer:
Good question. We first came out with the SE in 2001 and at that time we had another wave sail. By 2002, the SE was so popular that it became our only wave sail. I didn't want to confuse people by changing the name and that is why we still have the SE.

Ezzy Wave SE 4.2 Test with Dan Thomson

I thought the 2007 SE was Ezzy's best sail ever. Perhaps David's idea this year was "Don't mess with a good thing." The sail has very similar look, construction and feel as the 2007 model. It benefits from the same great low end power and huge wind range. Improvements have been made on the on sail tuning guide, making it a breeze for anyone to rig right. This year's tuning guide specifies the range of outhaul instead of giving an absolute number, encouraging sailors to tune to their specific conditions. Super tough X-ply continues to be the material of choice – vinyl window – no monofilm!
