Back in 1983, David Ezzy made his first windsurfing sail under the Ezzy Sail black and white eagle logo. He started his custom sail business on Maui in an old shed that has since become a sleek design loft. Back then, custom sails were the means to success for every serious sailor and Ezzy Sails led the sailing revolution. Ezzy made sails that were renowned for their "Hookipa" traits: strength and power........and even now in 2007, each Ezzy sail is hand crafted and then rigged to ensure the quality control that Ezzy expects. David Ezzy continues to be the sole sail designer at Ezzy sails. He tests his own sails on the water every day that the wind blows........and travel to any hardcore windsurfing spot in the world and you'll find many of the locals using Ezzy, simple.

Wave SE 2007
2007 Special Edition Ezzy Wave

"David Ezzy's Explains the 2007 Sails"

The new 2007 Wave SE sails have radically more shape forward than previous sails. I am referring mainly to the two battens directly above the boom. Battens #3 and #4 have a very deep draft right behind the mast. Having this extreme shape forward gives the sails a very stable, yet powerful feeling.

Εικόνα

The critical design feature is that the draft does not extend back.
The endobatten allows us to really wind up the batten tension and still keep the sail symmetrical and easy to flip. A traditional batten pocket would not work with my new profile.

The draft in the middle battens is very rigid, almost like having a cam, but the sail still has a soft feeling and flips easily. The fact that the batten is so locked makes the sails very stable.

New Rigging Concept

The required downhaul tension is much less on the new ’07 sails. In fact, if you over-downhaul you kill the nice feeling. The reason is that if you downhaul too much, you remove a lot of the forward draft that is built into the sail.

The new sails have a huge outhaul range. It can be as little as 2.5 cm and up to 6.5cm. The outhaul is the main way to flatten the sail. In strong winds you use a lot of outhaul. Having a lot of positive outhaul is a good thing. It equates to how much range a sail has. Many sails on the market have one outhaul setting that varies only by on about a cm either way for light wind and heavy wind. This means these sails will have less wind range.
Our sail on the other hand can be set totally bagged out, or super flat. Both settings feel great.

Other Refinements

We have new sleeve cloth this year for the wave sail. This cloth has surpassed my expectations. We now have much stronger yarns in the warp and weft, plus an extra weft yarn that stops the tears from traveling up the sleeve.

Also new this year is the tack pulley. Many people requested a pulley over the years. Our pulley has dividers to stop the pulleys from touching.

Εικόνα

There are other smaller improvements as well. A new clew patch better supports loading, a new head patch and extra reinforcement on the foot of the sails. Also, a new window shape and additional leech stabilizers between battens #3 and #4.

The 6.5 and 7.0 SE have 6 battens (like last year) but the boom has been shortened up a bit on both, which gives them nicer handling. These two sizes are called "Ezzy Wave Free-Ride Edition".

Infinity 2007

Like the Ezzy Wave SE, the 2007 Infinity has radically more shape built into the forward section of the sail.

The 2007 Infinity’s deep, draft-forward design makes it a very powerful flat-water sail. The Infinity has two removable cams, one above and one below the boom. With both cams in, this sail is a perfect free ride/slalom sail. The shape is forward which means the Infinity can be set with an extremely deep draft for lighter winds without the back hand getting loaded. Take the top cam out and use the Infinity with just the lower cam and you get the ease of rotation of a no-cam sail, with the power and stability of a cambered sail. Take both cam out and you have a great blasting sail for small waves.

Εικόνα

The Infinity utilizes the Ezzy Universal Cam system, which fits any mast diameter from a skinny to 15 year old standard diameter mast.

The Infinity utilizes our Endo-Batten Construction which means it doesn’t have traditional batten pockets laid on top of the sail panels. Instead, the batten is sandwiched between the sail’s panel layers providing the same, symmetrical profile to the sail on both starboard and port tack.

New Rigging Concept:

The required downhaul tension is less on the new ’07 sails. In fact, if you over-downhaul you kill the nice feeling. The reason is that if you downhaul too much, you remove a lot of the forward draft that is built into the sail.

Εικόνα

The new Infinity has a huge outhaul range. The more the outhaul range, the more the wind range. It can be set as little as 0.5 cm for lighter wind and up to 6.5cm of positive outhaul for stronger winds.

Other Refinements:

Also new this year is the tack pulley. Our pulley has vertical dividers that make threading the rope faster and also reduce the friction between the pulleys.

The Infinity will out-last the other freeride or cammed sails sold today. The Infinity has no monofilm. It is made with our Spectra® Reinforced "X" Film. This is the same material we use in our Ezzy Wave SE. In fact, the Infinity has the same construction as the Ezzy Wave SE, including a vinyl window that can be cleaned and won’t scratch!

Ezzy Masts

Details: Ezzy SKINNY masts contain 90% pre-preg carbon fiber. Pre-preg is the key to acheiving a superior weight- to strength ratio. The fibers are pre-saturated to an exact resin-to-fiber ratio, then hand-wrapped around a mandrel, and then thermally cured.

The Ezzy Skinny Mast gets its superior strength from the 50% extra thickness of its walls. The small diameter makes the Ezzy Skinny a dream to sail. You'll notice the improved handling right away in your jibes.

Ezzy Boom Shim
Each mast comes with a mast shim that fits a standard boom.

Ezzy tops and bottoms are interchangeable and sold individually. You can buy the perfect combination for your sail quiver. That means fewer masts. The general rule when mixing tops and bottoms is: choose a shorter bottom with a longer top.

Talk to your local dealer about a skinny dedicated mast extension, or conversion parts to convert your existing mast extension to work with skinny masts.

The Ezzy Sails are widely tested on standard and reduced diameter masts, and work perfectly well, but if you are looking for the perfect blend of performance and durability for Wave, Bump and Jump or even Slalom conditions, the RDM mast system is is the way to go. The Ezzy Skinny masts work FANTASTIC on the Infinity Series!

David Ezzy comments, "We wouldn't put our name on it unless we felt it was completely proven. You have got to try these masts!"

How To Choose The Perfect Mast Combination For Your Quiver:

1.
Pick the top and bottom that fits the sail you use the most.
2.
Use a longer top for your bigger sail.
3.
Use a shorter bottom for your smaller sail.

Ezzy History:
Twenty five years ago, David Ezzy made his first windsurfing sail under the Ezzy Sail black and white eagle logo. He started his custom sail business on Maui in an old shed that has since become a sleek design loft.

Back then, custom sails were the means to success for every serious sailor and Ezzy Sails led the sailing revolution. Ezzy made sails that were renowned for their "Hookipa" traits: strength and power.

In 1985, North Sails Windsurfing hired Ezzy to create their wave sail line and within two years Ezzy was in charge of all North's lines including race sails for World Cup champion Stephan Van den Berg. In addition to the North Sails logo, the sails bore either the Ezzy logo or David Ezzy's name on them. Production and profits rose under David Ezzy's leadership. Ezzy became a Board member of North Sails Windsurfing in 1991.

His early experience of having control over the quality at North Sails Windsurfing, made him realize that he would have to own his own factory to produce the high quality sails he wanted.

Each Ezzy sail is hand crafted and then rigged to ensure the quality control that Ezzy expects. David Ezzy continues to be the sole sail designer at Ezzy sails. He tests his own sails on the water every day that the wind blows.

"Quality Is Our Strength"

Ezzy Sails takes pride in every sail we make, and we want to be sure that your quiver will withstand all of the rigors that Mother Nature can dish up!

Ezzy Sail Materials:
1. The 2007 Ezzy Sails.

Our Spectra® X-Film, with its super-tough Spectra® Yarns laminated between two layers of film, has 1,000 times stronger tear strength and better UV resistance than monofilm.
Εικόνα
David Ezzy's own triaxial rip-stop film that now sets the standard by which all other sail materials are measured. The new x-ply laminate material utilizes a Spectra® yarn. Braided with a polyester filament, in a wide triaxial grid, the results are astonishing
Εικόνα
Due to the wider grid pattern, this material weighs less than our previous x-ply film, thus reducing the sails' overall weight. A benefit to surf sailors and swell riders, the Spectra laminate also offers improved visibility and five times the rip-stopping power of traditional x-ply laminate films. This has resulted in a revolutionary material which boasts an unprecedented strength-to-weight ratio.

The Spectra® laminate film is found in the Ezzy Wave Special Edition, the Ezzy Infinity, and the Ezzy Eagle Kids Sail.

2. Vinyl windows
Εικόνα
Vinyl is a super durable material that is very hard to puncture or rip. Other sail companies a monofilm window that will fog up due to exposure to the sun. Monofilm is much easier to puncture or tear with your harness hook, knees or head. The Ezzy Special Edition Wave and Eagle series sails feature vinyl windows.

3. Endobatten Shaping
Εικόνα
The shaping in our sails is done in every panel along with the luff curve. There is shape in every panel and every panel overlaps to create a batten pocket. Doing this we can make the draft in the sail move forward. Other company’s sails, the draft moves back when you sheet in. This creates a constant pull on your backhand

4. Unparalleled R&D
Εικόνα
10 months out of the year we are designing, making and testing prototypes for the next year’s sails. We make almost a sail a day. Other companies make 1 sail a week or every two weeks. We test our sails in a variety of conditions on Maui. We are constantly trying new ideas and materials to make our sails better than the rest

5. Finest Manufacturing Standards Available
Εικόνα
Every Ezzy Sail is assembled by David Ezzy's own factory. This means the quality control is set up to his exacting standards. Every sail is rigged before it leaves the factory to make sure every seam is flawless.

When the sails are being made in the factory, every one is rigged and checked for quality.

"Quality Is Our Strength"

Ezzy Sails takes pride in every sail we make, and we want to be sure that your quiver will withstand all of the rigors that Mother Nature can dish up!

EVERY sail is rigged and checked before it’s shipped.

Every sail we make is computer cut and our tolerances are as follows:

Seams: 0.25 mm

Luff curve: 1.0 mm

All sails have the endobatten construction, which means the seams are the batten pockets. This also means that each panel section must be finished on the edges and the last thing that happens (before the sleeve goes on) is the batten seams are sewn. That means we are unable to correct the luff or leech side if the panels do not line up, the result being the sail could not be made. This is not the case with a conventional batten pocket construction that the other companies use. They can be off by 10mm or more and still fudge the leech or luff edges, but they will be also changing the design. My point being, it is impossible for us to produce a bad sail. If that weren’t enough, we also rig EVERY sail and go over them with a fine tooth comb to make sure the shape and sewing is perfect.

David Ezzy explains why he has made his freeride sails like his wave sails!:

This is Ezzy's no cam freeride sail and who better to tell us all about it than the man himself;

David Ezzy: Initially, I had no plans to make a no-cam freeride sail. I’ve always felt that for flatwater sailing you can't beat a cam for its superior draft stability. After much pleading from one of our largest shops in the US requesting me to make a freeride sail, I started thinking that my new deep, draft-forward profile that I was using in the 2007 wave sail might be pretty cool in a freeride sail. The first Freeride proto turned out to be extremely stable and very powerful. It felt very much like it had cams, yet gybed like a wave sail.

The 07 FREERIDE NC explained

David Ezzy: The Freeride is designed with a radically deep profile that is located very forward in the sail. For light wind, you can run it with neutral to 1.0cm of outhaul and get a super deep profile. The fact that the draft is so forward means that there is less side force which means your back hand does not load up. For strong wind, you apply a lot of outhaul, up to 7.0 cm of positive outhaul and then it feels light with a locked-in shape. The reason for this is that even when set flat, the forward profile remains. It is also interesting to note that the Freeride and all of our 2007 sails require less downhaul tension in years past. Over-downhauling will flatten the luff too much and will actually make them harder to control in strong winds. Most of the tuning is done with the outhaul.

CONSTRUCTION

David Ezzy: The Freeride construction and materials are exactly the same as used in our wave sail. The body material is our Spectra X film. It has a vinyl window. All seams are double sewn. It has two battens below the boom to add more foot area. The foot rakes nicely on the board for slalom-type sailing, yet it is high enough for bump’n’jump sailing too.
